چکیده

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Sensitive skin is a condition associated with reduced tolerance to environmental factors and/or the application of topical products, such as cosmetics. Its pathophysiology has not been fully elucidated and few data are available on its prevalence. The aim of this study was to investigate possible correlation between objective sensitivity and skin surface microrelief. METHODS During an epidemiological survey conducted for a campaign promoted by International Society of Plastic Dermatology in Italy, 243 adult healthy subjects of both sexes with no evident dermatological disorder but positive to the lactic acid stinging test, were submitted to cyanoacrylate stratum corneum stripping from the volar forearm for the determination of the irregularity of the skin surface microrelief (irregularity skin index (ISI)). RESULTS A significant correlation was found between intensity of symptoms in stingers and ISI (r(s)=-0.47; P<0.001). CONCLUSION Sensitive skin is common in the healthy population. ISI can contribute towards the identification of subjects with sensitive skin and the development of more specific skin treatments for this prevalent condition.

On skin microrelief and the emergence of expression micro-wrinkles.

Over the course of a life time, as a result of adaptive mechanobiological processes (e.g. ageing), or the action of external physical factors such as mechanical loading, the human skin is subjected to, and hosts complex biophysical processes. These phenomena typically operate through a complex interplay, that, ultimately, is responsible for the evolutive geometrical characteristics of the skin ...

Computational Tools for Enabling Longitudinal Skin Image Analysis

We present a set of computational tools that enable quantitative analysis of longitudinally acquired skin images: the assessment and characterization of the evolution of skin features over time. A framework for time-lapsed skin imaging is proposed. A nonrigid registration algorithm based on multiple plane detection for landmark identification accurately aligns pairs of longitudinal skin images....

Contribution of human skin topography to the characterization of dynamic skin tension during senescence: morpho-mechanical approach

The structuring of the dermis with a network of collagen and elastic fibres gives a three-dimensional structure to the skin network with directions perpendicular and parallel to the skin surface. This three-dimensional morphology prints on the surface of the stratum corneum a three dimensional network of lines which express the mechanical tension of the skin at rest. To evaluate the changes of ...

Skin capacitance imaging, a new technique for investigating the skin surface.

Thanks to the recently introduced silicone image sensor technology, skin capacitance imaging has now been made possible. The dedicated device is called SkinChip. This method is easy to handle and provides information about the skin microrelief, the level of stratum corneum hydration and the sweat gland activity. The apparatus sees and measures these parameters with a 50 microm resolution. A ser...

Antiaging efficacy of melatonin-based day and night creams: a randomized, split-face, assessor-blinded proof-of-concept trial

Background Skin is a complete and independent melatoninergic system. At the skin level, melatonin (Mel) acts as a relevant antioxidant and cytoprotective substance. Topical application of Mel is considered meaningful, since it can easily penetrate the stratum corneum. Exogenous Mel can be expected to represent a potent antioxidative defense system against skin aging mechanisms. Day and night cr...
